As a custom home builder, Gulfstream Homes is able to accommodate many different requests from clients who wish to include unique spaces in their new home. One of the most requested spaces is a dedicated space for a home gym. No one wants unsightly and bulky workout equipment sitting in their beautiful new living space.

Fortunately many of our home plans already include, or can be modified to include, an area for a home gym. Floor plans like our popular Woodstock model already include what we call a flex space. When choosing to design a space for a home gym here are the following things to consider.

Flooring

It makes sense to start from the ground up. When you start looking at flooring options for a home gym you want to make sure it’s durable. Workout equipment is heavy and if weights get dropped you want a floor that can resist chipping. The most common types of flooring for home gyms include:

  • Rubber floor mats
  • Cork
  • Hardwood
  • Vinyl flooring

Each type of flooring has its benefits and drawbacks. When you choose your flooring type, consider if the floors will take a beating with moisture, weight or movement. Our professional design team members can go through the various options with you to make sure you make the right choice based on your workout profile.

Lighting

Lighting can often be a last thought when designing your home gym but can make a huge difference in appearance and functionality. Strategically placing lighting in the right workout zoned areas will help you feel more relaxed as well as be able to see better.

Equipment

Take into consideration the types of equipment you have for your gym and also the equipment you plan to purchase in the future. You want to make sure your home gym isn’t overcrowded with so many different types of machines that it’s hard to move around. Planning out specific spaces for cardio equipment, weights and stretching or yoga will help make your gym feel organized and flow well.

Accessorize with Extras

There are things you can add to your space that will make it feel more organized and help keep it clean. Consider adding a weight rack that can expand as you add more weights to your grouping. Other things to think about include a mini refrigerator for keeping cold waters handy, a hamper for dirty towels and wipes to keep equipment clean. Some homeowners enjoy having a television set mounted on the wall to play their workouts on or to watch television while they work out.

The options are endless when you choose to include a home gym in your new home. Home gyms provide you the opportunity to work out at your own pace, on your own time and in the privacy of your own home.
